Pneumococcus is mainly spread through droplets. Severe pneumococcal infection can cause acute otitis media, even life-threatening invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) such as bacteremic pneumonia, sepsis and meningitis.
High-risk group includes toddlers under 5-year-old and aged 65 or older need to be vaccinated with 23-valent pneumococcal vaccination. Hong Kong government has been providing additional subsidies to the elderly of age 65 years or above.
