Bone Density Examination

Publish date:2021-10-27

Event Date:2021-10-08

Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease of the bone, which leads to reduction in bone density. The density of the affected bones becomes lower, and the bones become more fragile, and may break easily, resulting in fractures.

According to statistics, the number of fractures in Asia has increased by 2 to 3 times in the past 30 years. It is estimated that about half of all fractures in the world will occur in Asia after 10 to 20 years. Although osteoporosis is not life threatening, it greatly affects the quality of life and mobility. Patients may experience back pain or develop humpback or other complications.

Osteoporosis risk factors:

• Advancing age
• Having an unhealthy lifestyle (low calcium intake, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption)
• Being underweight or having a small body frame
• Long term medication of steroid, aluminum-containing antacid or peptic ulcer drugs

Osteoporosis is usually clinically silent until a fracture occurs. Regular bone mineral density check-ups, together with supplementation of calcium, dietary and lifestyles adjustments can help with the prevention of the disease.
